It’s the simple things

On our way to a bike store, we passed by a little child (about 3 years old) paddling a bike with a sidecar full of cartons and other stuff. It was hot and he looked tired. I asked my eldest daughter to look at that kid and ponder about her blessings.

I asked my daughter to count her blessings. I told her to internalize about her having a complete family (where as other parents have to go abroad to support their children’s needs), good school, nice house, clothes.

And then I moved on to letting her see the bigger blessings that we don’t usually realize. I explained to her that the blessing of sight is such a big blessing. How could she possible cross the street without her eyesight or how could she see my face and her dad’s and her sister’s without her eyes. How will she know her beauty when she can’t see? I told her how blessed she is that she can breath, she can speak, she can hear, she can feel and touch.

I want my children to understand what real blessings mean. It’s the simple things in life that we don’t usually appreciate. Blessings does not only mean expensive houses and cars or a high-paying job or a beautiful outside appearance. Blessings are our family, friends and loved ones. They are the food on the table, the water that flows out of our faucets, the air that we breathe, the sun that gives us light, the birds that sing and this vast world that we live in. Blessings are everywhere – you just have to take a break and see that every little thing in your life is a gift – something that God has graciously given you.

When we learn to count our blessings, we realize that life is beautiful. We understand God’s love for us and we will know that everything we need, no matter how big or small, has already been provided to us by our Heavenly Father.

James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

God’s generous blessings to me:
